St. Lawrence-in-the-Square, Winchester
Gatehouse Church

St. Lawrence's is a fascinating little church crammed in amongst the shops of Great Minster Street in Winchester. You can be right on top of the place and never have even noticed it was there. Only when you pull back into the Square, does its sturdy tower break the skyline to reveal its hiding place.

St. Lawrence's was originally a Saxon church guarding the main entrance to the Episcopal precinct. It was swallowed up in William the Conqueror's expansion of the Royal Palace, adjoining the Cathedral, and became the Chapel Royal of the Norman Kings of England. The present building is largely 15th century, but there is also a little work from previous centuries. It is usually open for public inspection.
