St. Edburga of Lyming
(Died c.AD 650)

St. Edburga of Lyming is said to have been the first Anglo-Saxon virgin princess who dedicated herself to the service of God. She was daughter of Aethelbert, the first Christian King of Kent, and his wife, St. Bertha. She was also the sister of St. Ethelburga of Lyming and became a nun with her in the first English nunnery, at Lyming in Kent. A well, near the church there, bears her name and was long believed to possess miraculous healing powers.

Edited from Agnes Dunbar's "A Dictionary of Saintly Women" (1904).
