Edsige, Archbishop of Canterbury
(Died 1050)
Chaplain to King Canute and priest of St. Martin's, outside Canterbury, Edsige was promoted to the Archbishopric in 1038.
He crowned King Harthacanute and officiated at the Coronation of Edward the Confessor, which took place at Winchester in 1043. However, his state of health compelled him to appoint Siward, Abbot of Abingdon, as his vicar, apparently with full control of the archiepiscopal see. Siward is erroneously said to have scarcely allowed the Archbishop the necessities of life. In the end Edsige outlived him and died on 29th October 1050.
