POMPARLES BRIDGE Excalibur Returned to Somerset Pomparles Bridge, the Pont-Perles or "Perilous Bridge," just outside Glastonbury, once guarded the Southern approach to this well-known Dark Age Settlement. 6th century Glastonbury stood on high ground above the marshy waters of the Somerset Levels that have now been largely drained away. This boggy ground below Wearyall Hill once formed the lake that claimed to be the home of the Lady of the Lake, and Pomparles Bridge spanned its Western End (See Map). From here, Bedwyr threw the great Excalibur back into the swirling waters after King Arthur fell at the fateful Battle of Camlann. The battle supposedly took place on the nearby River Cam and the mortally wounded King was, of course, taken to Glastonbury, the Isle of Avalon, where he was eventually buried.
