A British Masterpiece. This is a page from a famous British illuminated manuscript called the 'Lichfield Gospels'. It was written somewhere in Wales in about AD 730. It belonged to the Abbey of Llandeilo Fawr, where a manumission document was added in the margin about 100 years later. In the 10th century, it was taken to Lichfield Cathedral in England. It is sometimes called the 'Book of Teilo' or the 'Book of Chad'. This page shows St. Luke. The patterns are not quite as detailed as those in the 'Lindisfarne Gospels,' but it is still very beautiful. The 'Lichfield Gospels' are still kept at Lichfield Cathedral in Staffordshire.
