Who lived in Roman
Britain?
|
- The people who lived in Britain
before the Romans arrived were called Celts. The Celts lived
in several countries in Western Europe. The ones in Britain
are therefore often called Britons after their country.
- The Romans invaded Britain in AD
43 and ruled for almost 400 years.
- During that time people from all
over the Roman Empire came to trade with and to live in
Britain.
- These people may have come from
Gaul (now called France), Espania (now called Spain), Italy
(where true Romans came from the city of Rome), Greece, North Africa
or the Middle East.
- Many of them married local
Britons and had children.
- Over the centuries, the
people of Britain ended up with mixed bloodlines. However,
they were
still Britons living a Roman way of life. So they are usually
called Romano-Britons or the Romano-British.
